2010 CSA Harvest Box Program

Makaria Farm offers a weekly CSA Harvest Box Program in which you can sign-up to receive a box of our freshest produce each week throughout the season. By registering and paying before the growing season, we know how much to plant to give you a good weekly share of the harvest. Registration is now open for this third year of Makaria Farm's CSA Harvest Box Program.

What is a CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a form of direct marketing of fresh vegetables and fruits based on an agreement between farmers and consumers who pay in advance for a weekly share of fresh vegetables through the growing season. This direct relationship serves to strengthen rural-urban ties on the basis of food production and to support local organic producers.

New This Year

We have extended the length of the harvest box program from 15 weeks to 18 weeks, increasing the total cost of the box, even though the weekly cost has gone down slightly.

We continuously strive to improve our boxes. Thanks to survey feedback from our 2009 program participants, we are planning to include more tomatoes and cucumbers, while also increasing the variety of produce in the box. We are reducing the frequency of certain items such as beets, edamame, and Blue Russian potatoes. We will also increase the amount and variety of swap items available so that you have more opportunity to customize your box. As always, we try to include staple items that most people will use on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, we are taking out strawberries as a regular item due to the difficulty of picking them on time, especially after a night's rain or heavy dew. Strawberries will still be included from time to time and may also be available for sale in limited quantities during pick-up, on occasion.

2010 Box Options

Full Box: $465
(18 weeks, mid-June to mid-October)
Each box will contain approximately 13lbs of veggies on average over the season. Recommended for two adults who enjoy a reasonable quantity of vegetables, or a single person who eats a lot of vegetables (e.g. vegetarians).

The Every-Other-Week Box: $232.50
(9 boxes over 18 weeks, mid-June to mid-October)
This option replaces the Half Box we offered in 2009. By offering alternating-week pick-up of a Full Box, we are decreasing the number of trips (carbon footprint) needed to get the same amount of produce while increasing the quantity of food available for you to work with at once. Given their freshness, most items will keep well for at least two weeks (e.g. garlic, potatoes, carrots, zucchini, even lettuce).

Discount benefits: We aim to fill the boxes with enough produce to give you an average discount of 10% to 15% on our farm gate prices. Boxes will have more items in the peak season and have fewer items in the shoulder seasons, to take full advantage of seasonal production.

What's In a Box?

Included regularly when available: sugar snap peas, carrots, tomatoes, garlic, cucumbers, onions, lettuce/spinach/greens, broccoli, zucchini, bell peppers, potatoes, snap beans, and beets (every other week).

May be included to fill in for a lack of a regular item, to increase variety, or just because we have lots and want you to have a great box: apples, cabbage, sweet corn, herbs, pumpkins, winter squash, kale, leeks, kohlrabi, green onions, edamame (fresh soybeans), radishes, etc.
